A Unique Legacy in Colombian Combat Sports
The world of Colombian combat sports is witnessing a story unlike any other. Alejandro Calderón, a 15-year-old prodigy, and his father Oscar “El Ratel” Calderón, 36, are rewriting history in kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Together, they have become the first father-and-son duo in Colombia to compete in MMA, marking a milestone that not only shines a spotlight on Huila but also inspires families across the nation.
Oscar, a professional MMA fighter and black belt in kickboxing, is not just Alejandro’s father—he is also his coach and mentor. Originally from Tello, Huila, Oscar moved to Bogotá in search of opportunities that Neiva could not offer. His son followed in his footsteps, and now both are thriving on the national stage. “We fight for our dreams, and thanks to God we are starting to see the results,” Oscar shared with La Nación.
Alejandro Calderón: A Rising Star at Just 15
Despite his young age, Alejandro has already earned impressive accolades in the sport. He became National Kickboxing Champion at the ISMAF Colombia Martial Arts Open in May 2025 and followed up with another national title at the TOP CAPITAL striking and martial arts tournament in July 2025. His journey also took him abroad, where he became the South American runner-up in the children’s division in Quito, Ecuador.
Alejandro’s rapid rise is no accident—his discipline and his father’s guidance have made him one of Colombia’s top prospects. Oscar proudly believes his son could soon represent the country at a global level. “Alejandro is becoming one of the best youth prospects to represent Colombia next year at the World Championship, and he may one day become a serious candidate for the UFC in the United States,” Oscar emphasized.
Oscar “El Ratel” Calderón: Veteran, Trainer, and Trailblazer
Oscar Calderón himself is no stranger to success. With more than a decade of martial arts experience, he has collected titles that have built his reputation as one of Colombia’s most respected fighters. His record includes:
- International Kickboxing Champion in Venezuela
- South American Kickboxing Runner-up in Ecuador
- Four-time National Kickboxing Champion
Balancing his own professional career while training his son, Oscar embodies the spirit of dedication and sacrifice that defines great athletes.
Making History Together in MMA
The most historic moment for the Calderón family came when MMA authorities officially recognized them as the first father-and-son pair to compete in the same cage under the same Colombian promotion. Alejandro will make his MMA debut on September 6, 2025, standing alongside his father in the record books. “This is proof that dreams can be shared,” Oscar explained. “It shows families that they can work together, chase goals, and make history.”
Why They Left Huila for Bogotá
Despite their deep pride in being huilenses, Oscar admits that opportunities in Huila were scarce. For this reason, the family moved to Bogotá, where access to training facilities, promoters, and competitive events gave them the platform they needed to grow. “Bogotá gave us the chance to keep improving as athletes and as father and son,” Oscar concluded.
The Calderóns’ journey is more than just a sports story—it is a tale of family, resilience, and breaking barriers in Colombian MMA. With every fight, Alejandro and Oscar are proving that unity and determination can turn dreams into history.
