Dominican MMA Fighter Calls for More Support to Reach Global Stage
The Dominican Republic has a growing presence in mixed martial arts (MMA), but local athletes say the journey to international recognition remains an uphill battle. Recently, MMA fighter Luis Daniel De Jesús Soriano and his coach Jeffrey Amarante spoke on Primera Bola via RC Noticias, urging for more institutional and private sector support to propel Dominican talent worldwide.
Evolution of MMA in the Dominican Republic
MMA has been practiced in the Dominican Republic since the early 2000s, steadily building a loyal fan base. The promotion Fighting Force, run by the Aguaje family, has become the nation’s leading organizer, packing events with up to 6,000 fans inside the Pabellón de Karate at the Centro Olímpico. This growth has inspired a new wave of fighters aiming to represent the country on prestigious international stages.
Luis Daniel’s Achievements in Combat Sports
Luis Daniel is not just an MMA athlete; he is a decorated martial artist with medals in judo, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, and Sambo. His sambo career, in particular, stands out. He is a Pan-American champion and holds the record for the fastest knockout in the sport—just three seconds, beating his previous mark of eight seconds. These accolades prove his world-class caliber and readiness for bigger opportunities.
Challenges Facing Dominican Fighters
Despite his success, Luis Daniel and his coach highlighted the financial strain of pursuing a professional MMA career. Training gear, supplements, and proper nutrition require significant investment, often covered by family and close mentors. While programs exist under the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Youth, athletes must form NGOs to access funding—something that limits many fighters. Recently, Luis Daniel was invited to a training camp in Brazil, but lack of resources kept him from attending.
A Call to Action for Sponsors and Institutions
For now, the Dominican Sambo Federation will cover his expenses for the upcoming World Championship, thanks to president Elíseo Romero. Still, Luis Daniel is clear: sustainable support is needed. He invites sponsors and fans to connect via Instagram @luisdejesus and @flashdejesus, or on Facebook as Luis de Jesús.
