Edomex MMA
State of Mexico martial artists are facing a very severe crisis right now. In a story written by Humberto Ávila of El Sol de Toluca, Edomex MMA athletes are fighting a tough battle outside the cage. Despite earning spots on the global stage, essential financial support for these competitors was never delivered. Recently, government authorities officially authorized the promised funds. However, the requested money never arrived. This broken promise now threatens their international sports careers.
A Broken Promise For World Champions
For eight years, the Mixed Martial Arts Association of the State of Mexico has worked tirelessly. Under President Gerardo Martínez, the group saw massive growth over the past two years. Furthermore, they are officially recognized by the national federation and Conade. Yet, they have operated with virtually zero state backing. Previously, officials only provided basic tracksuits.
Last year, their hard work truly paid off. Five exceptional Edomex MMA athletes successfully qualified for the world championship. Consequently, they sought formal sports funding. Former Sports Institute Director José Manuel Sotomayor promised forty thousand pesos for each competitor and their coach. This money was crucial, as total travel expenses exceeded seventy thousand pesos per person.
Approved Funds Vanish Without A Trace
Trusting this official commitment, families made huge sacrifices. Many even borrowed money to cover travel costs. They believed the financial support was secure. Documentation was fully submitted. Sadly, the director was abruptly fired shortly afterward. Most shockingly, the vital funding was actually approved during a formal council session. Still, the money was never distributed. Therefore, these proud athletes remain in debt today.
The affected competitors include Irvin Méndez, Eloy Vázquez, Gabriela Pérez, Jorge Luna, and Leopoldo Rosete. Furthermore, coach Gerardo Martínez is also missing his authorized travel funds. These talented fighters proudly represented their country globally. Unfortunately, local authorities have completely failed them. Now, the MMA community demands answers and accountability. Will the state finally deliver the approved resources to these dedicated champions who sacrificed everything?
