Former Lightweight Champion Edgar “Smooth” Escárrega is officially returning to the cage! On August 30, UWC 59 hits Arena Tecate, marking his first Ultimate Warrior Challenge Mexico fight in over five years. Fans are absolutely thrilled.
A Long Awaited Comeback
Escárrega last defended his title in February 2020, just before the global pandemic. He originally started mixed martial arts for fitness and self defense. Today, his main motivation remains his mother, who keeps him heavily focused on his ultimate goals. He almost returned last year but faced unexpected delays. Recently, while cornering a teammate at UWC 58, he finally accepted the official offer to return.
Fighting Runs in the Family
Representing Victory Fight Club, Escárrega comes from a true fighting family in Ensenada. His older brother, Gammaliel, previously fought for the UWC Welterweight Championship. Meanwhile, his younger brother, Fabrizio, is heading to Dana White Contender Series. Escárrega loves fighting, but he also enjoys watching anime and swimming in the ocean. These fun hobbies help him relax during tough fight camps.
