Oscar De La Hoya
Oscar De La Hoya has some very harsh words for his former rival and fellow boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather. Recently, in a viral Instagram video, De La Hoya heavily criticized the ongoing string of Floyd Mayweather exhibitions. Specifically, he clearly suggested that it is finally time for his old foe to retire for good.
Mixed Reactions To Bizarre Fights
Mayweather’s latest fight was a highly publicized rematch against John Gotti III. Ultimately, this bizarre contest went the full eight rounds without an official score. Furthermore, their very first match together had ended in absolute chaos. Since then, Mayweather has willingly taken on a wide variety of unusual opponents. For instance, he fought YouTuber Logan Paul and former television star Aaron Chalmers. Additionally, he squared off against popular Japanese fighters Mikuru Asakura and Tenshin Nasukawa. Unsurprisingly, these exhibition fights have been met with mixed reactions from longtime boxing fans. Indeed, many observers feel that Floyd Mayweather exhibitions are mainly about flashy showmanship rather than serious competition.
Protecting A Legendary Sports Legacy
De La Hoya, famously known as “The Golden Boy,” firmly echoed these growing fan sentiments. Consequently, he passionately urged Mayweather to stop what he sees as a sad tarnishing of his legacy. “Floyd, you’re 50 years old. You’re a legend in this sport,” De La Hoya said. “But you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions. I know life is hard, I know life is expensive, but come on, put your legacy first. Nobody wants to remember you like this.”
Unpaid Debts And Tough Love
Interestingly, De La Hoya’s comments come as Mayweather faces legal troubles. Currently, one prominent Miami jeweler is suing him over unpaid debts from 2021. De La Hoya clearly referenced these issues, noting that financial challenges should not push him into bad decisions. “It’s hard to make money, but it’s even harder to keep it,” De La Hoya said. “Floyd, I am genuinely rooting for you, come on, let’s turn it all around.”
