In April 2022, Cuba reintroduced professional boxing, ending a 60-year prohibition that began under Fidel Castro’s regime. The ban, initiated in 1962, aimed to eliminate what was perceived as corruption in professional sports, compelling Cuban boxers to remain amateurs or defect to pursue professional careers abroad. This policy change signifies a pivotal shift in Cuba’s sports landscape.
Cuba Reintroduces Professional Boxing
The Cuban Boxing Federation, in collaboration with Golden Ring Promotions, facilitated this transition.
Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the federation, stated, “We began to study what was happening in the professional boxing world… resulting in the approved agreement between the country’s sport and the Cuban Boxing Federation with Golden Ring Promotions.”
Prominent Cuban boxers, including Olympic champions Julio César La Cruz and Arlen López, have embraced this opportunity.
La Cruz expressed enthusiasm about competing professionally, while López highlighted the potential for improved socio-economic conditions for athletes.
This development not only honors Cuba’s rich boxing heritage but also provides a platform for current and future athletes to excel on the professional stage.
