David Benavidez has been officially named World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion after Dmitry Bivol relinquished the title. This event represents an important milestone in Benavidez’s career.
Bivol’s decision to vacate the title followed his recent victory over Artur Beterbiev, which made him the undisputed champion.
Instead of defending the WBC title against Benavidez, Bivol chose to focus on unifying other titles, prompting the WBC to elevate Benavidez, who held the interim title, to full champion.
Benavidez expressed mixed feelings about the news. “I would have preferred to win the title in the ring, but I respect Bivol’s decision and I’m ready to face the best in the division,” he stated.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman praised Benavidez’s dedication and patience, noting his impressive wins and consistent performance in the super middleweight division before moving up a division.
With this new title, Benavidez’s future in the light heavyweight division looks promising.
Fans also expect a future fight between Benavidez and Bivol.
