David Benavidez has been officially named the WBC light heavyweight champion after Dmitry Bivol vacated the title. This development marks a significant milestone in Benavidez’s career.
Bivol’s decision to relinquish the title came after his recent victory over Artur Beterbiev, making him the undisputed champion. Instead of defending the WBC title against Benavidez, Bivol chose to focus on unifying other titles, leading to the WBC elevating Benavidez, who held the interim title, to full champion status.
Benavidez expressed mixed emotions about the news. “I would have preferred to win the title in the ring, but I respect Bivol’s decision and am ready to face the best in the division,” he stated.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán praised Benavidez’s dedication and patience, noting his impressive victories and consistent performance in the super middleweight division before moving up.
With this new title, Benavidez’s future in the light heavyweight division looks promising.
Fans are also hopeful for a future bout between Benavidez and Bivol.
