Haney’s suit alleges Garcia committed battery, fraud and breach of contract in connection with the pair’s April fight in New York
World Boxing Council (WBC) junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion, Devin Haney, has filed a lawsuit in New York against his last opponent, Ryan Garcia, claiming battery, fraud and breach of contract by Garcia, five months after the two faced off in Brooklyn, N.Y. in April.
The story was first reported by ESPN.com today.
The 25-year-old Haney filed the lawsuit, which seeks an unspecified amount of damages, as a result of Garcia, 26, testing positive for ostarine, a performance enhancing drug, after their fight.
The fraud and battery allegations are in response to Garcia weighing in 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound weight limit for the fight.
Garcia knocked Haney down three times over the course of the 12-round bout, earning a unanimous decision victory. The win was turned over, though, after Garcia tested positive for ostarine.
Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia’s promoter, is also named in the lawsuit.
Garcia is serving a one-year suspension handed to him as a result of the positive drug test. He is eligible to return to the ring in April.
