Celebrating Excellence in Martial Arts
On December 1, 2024, the Dominican Martial Arts Hall of Fame will host a landmark event in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Renowned athletes Gina María Ruiz, Nasiris Pérez, Elías Camaño (taekwon-do), and Alex Fernández (jiu-jitsu) will be honored for their achievements in martial arts. The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Auditorium of the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame Pavilion in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
A Tradition of Excellence
The event, organized by the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Committee of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame (SAFAMRD), promises to be a memorable celebration. According to SAFAMRD President Norberto Puello and Secretary General Ángel Ramos Brusiloff, preparations are progressing well. The honorary president will be Carlino González, a prominent advocate for martial arts. Additionally, a special dedication will honor sports legend Julio Mon Nadal.
Recognizing Remarkable Achievements
During the ceremony, notable contributors across martial arts disciplines will be recognized:
- Kung-fu: Guillermo Miniño and Rhino Richiez.
- Judo: Emilio Jiménez.
- Jiu-jitsu: Leo Marión.
- Taekwon-do: The Hato Mayor School.
Spotlight on Gina María Ruiz and Elías Camaño
Gina María Ruiz gained national fame by winning a gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. Her performance energized the Dominican delegation and secured her position as a standout athlete. Over the years, she has collected numerous medals in the Olympic cycle and other international tournaments.
Elías Camaño, a pioneer in taekwon-do, became the first Dominican to receive international referee certification in 1991. He has officiated at prestigious events in countries like Aruba, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. His exceptional contributions have earned him global recognition, including honors from the World Taekwon-do Federation.
