Celebrating Excellence in Martial Arts
On December 1, 2024, the Dominican Republic Martial Arts Hall of Fame will celebrate a historic event in Santo Domingo. Outstanding athletes such as Gina Maria RuizNasiris Perez, Elías Camaño (taekwondo) and Alex Fernandez (jiu-jitsu) will be honored for their achievements in the martial arts. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame, located at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
A Tradition of Excellence
This event, organized by the Standing Committee of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame of the Dominican Republic (SAFAMRD), promises to be an unforgettable celebration. According to Norberto Puello, president of SAFAMRD, and Angel Ramos Brusiloff, secretary general, preparations are going very well. Carlino González, renowned martial arts advocate, will be the honorary president of the event. In addition, a special tribute will be paid to the immortal Julio Mon Nadal, a legend of the sport.
Recognizing Outstanding Achievements
During the ceremony, outstanding contributors in various martial arts disciplines will be recognized:
- Kung-fu: Guillermo Miniño y Rhino Richiez
- Judo: Emilio Jiménez
- Jiu-jitsu: Leo Marion
- Taekwondo: The School of Hato Mayor
Gina María Ruiz and Elías Camaño stand out.
Gina María Ruiz achieved national fame by winning the gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. Her performance ignited the Dominican delegation and cemented her place as an outstanding athlete. Over the years, she has won numerous medals in the Olympic cycle and other international tournaments.
On the other hand, Elías Camaño, a pioneer in taekwondo, became the first Dominican to receive the international referee certification in 1991. He has refereed in prestigious events in countries such as Aruba, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. His extraordinary work has earned him global recognition, including honors from the World Taekwondo Federation.
