A Viral Daughter, A Worldwide Legacy
In 2019, Kaylie Mahoney Guerrero joined a TikTok trend and changed her life overnight. She shared a clip with a childhood photo alongside her father — Eddie Guerrero, WWE Hall of Famer and proud son of El Paso. She thought only a few wrestling fans would notice. However, the post exploded, receiving 1.8 million views and thousands of comments from people sharing stories about the man she simply knew as “Dad.”
Kaylie quickly realized how her father’s legacy inspires fans worldwide. Latinos, in particular, connect with his courage, charisma, and corazón. This love remains so strong that El Paso is preparing a tribute unlike any other.
Eddie Guerrero Day: A Citywide Celebration
On Tuesday, Nov. 18, El Paso will officially proclaim Eddie Guerrero Day. The event honors the 20th anniversary of his passing and celebrates the hometown superstar who proved greatness can rise from the Borderland. District 3 city representative Deanna Maldonado-Rocha, a lifelong lucha libre fan, pushed for the recognition after fans requested ways to honor Eddie’s memory.
Outside City Hall, lowriders — including one Eddie once cruised through El Paso — will line North Campbell Street. Fans will gather wearing luchador masks and carrying memorabilia. Eddie was known for his electrifying entrances and showmanship, so organizers aim for energy that matches the legacy: part proclamation, part fiesta, and entirely El Paso.
The Rise, the Battles, and the Redemption
Born Oct. 9, 1967, Eddie Guerrero came from a wrestling dynasty led by his father, the legendary Gory Guerrero. From Ciudad Juárez arenas to Jefferson High School mats, Eddie honed the style that made him one of the most technically gifted wrestlers ever.
Guerrero’s career spanned Lucha Libre AAA, ECW, WCW, and WWE, where his “Lie, Cheat and Steal” persona made him heroic yet hilariously unpredictable. Behind the entertainment, he fought real struggles, overcoming substance-use issues. He captured the WWE Championship in 2004, a victory he often credited to renewed family bonds and faith.
“I try to study a lot of it because this is what I love, this is what I do,” he said. “El Paso is a very important city for the world of lucha libre. We have a lot of history here in El Paso, a lot of wrestlers that have been famous … Eddie Guerrero.
A Chicano Hero Who Lives On
Today, arenas still erupt with “Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!” whenever his name is mentioned. His influence continues through his daughters, the wrestlers he inspired, and fans who say he made them proud to be Mexican.
On Eddie Guerrero Day, El Paso isn’t just remembering a champion. The city celebrates one of its own — forever.
