The story of Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Col\u00f3n<\/em><\/a> serves as a powerful reminder of why it is crucial to adhere to the rules of the sport, not only for safety but also for the integrity of the game. In October 2015<\/strong>, Col\u00f3n\u2019s<\/strong> fight against Terrel Williams<\/em><\/a> took a tragic turn when Williams <\/strong>repeatedly struck Col\u00f3n<\/strong> in the back of the head\u2014an illegal move in boxing. Despite Col\u00f3n’s<\/strong> repeated pleas to the referee, the illegal blows continued without consequence. After nine rounds of punishment, Col\u00f3n <\/strong>collapsed in the dressing room and was later diagnosed with a severe brain hemorrhage<\/em><\/a>. The aftermath left Col\u00f3n<\/strong> in a coma for 221 days<\/strong>, and his life and career were forever changed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, while going over news stories, I read about the tragic passing of Fijian<\/strong> boxer Ubayd Haider<\/em><\/a> after his fight with China\u2019s<\/strong> Zhou Runqi<\/em><\/a>. For us latino’s, Col\u00f3n<\/strong> always comes to mind when reading unfortunate news like this, along with a sobering reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and adhering to safety protocols in combat sports. Haider<\/strong>, who collapsed following their IBO<\/em><\/a> Asia-Pacific Super Featherweight title<\/strong><\/em> fight in Nadi<\/strong>, Fiji<\/strong>, passed away two weeks later after being in a coma and undergoing emergency brain surgery. Despite Zhou<\/strong> following the rules during the bout, which saw him land several strong punches, the outcome raises difficult questions about the balance between fierce competition and the safety of athletes. Zhou<\/strong> expressed his condolences, honoring Haider’s spirit and determination, stating that he fought until the very end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
