Holguín Wins First National Boxing Title in Cuba
Holguin, Cuba- Holguin Wins Cuba‘s First National Boxing Title. With an impressive total of 287 points, the team was crowned champion in the final held this Sunday at the Rafael Fortún multipurpose hall in Camagüey. Holguín, by tying 40-40 with Guantánamo on the last date, achieved an irretrievable advantage for Camagüey, which finished with 271 points after a 38-38 tie against Cienfuegos.
Holguín’s Strong Performance Secures Victory
The last day consolidated Holguín as champion. The tie with Guantánamo was enough to maintain its leadership, while Camagüey could not catch up. Guantánamo took third place with 253 points, followed by Matanzas (226), Pinar del Río (198) and Sancti Spíritus (146) in the general classification.
Holguín Highlights Shine in Competition
The Holguín team stood out for the performance of three boxers who won all their fights: Santiago reinforcement Jesús Álvarez (48 kg), Raikol Leonard (75 kg) and Jorge Soto (80 kg). These athletes were key to achieve the title, maintaining a high level throughout the tournament.
Retreat and Recognition: A Historic Moment
The event also marked the retirement of boxer Yunier Fábregas (51 kg), who reinforced Holguín during the competition. Fábregas, world youth champion in 2002, put an end to his active career. In addition, Julio Galloso (MTZ, 57 kg) and Rolando Martínez (GTM) received the award for the best bout of the tournament, while Keylor García (GTM, 75 kg) was recognized as the most technical boxer. Olympic champion Erislandy Alvarez (CFG, 63.5 kg) was named the most combative fighter.
