Jaime Munguía tested positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites following his May 3rd victory over Bruno Surace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This revelation has cast doubt on the legitimacy of his unanimous decision win. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) reported the adverse finding from a post-fight urine sample collected on May 4. Munguía now has ten days to request analysis of his B-sample, which could confirm or refute the initial result.
Jaime Munguía Tested Positive
In response, Munguía expressed surprise, stating that he had undergone two negative tests during training camp. He emphasized his commitment to clean competition and willingness to cooperate fully with further testing. His team is investigating potential sources of contamination, including supplements and medications.
Trainer Eddy Reynoso, associated with Canelo Álvarez, clarified that he does not oversee Munguía’s nutrition or medical regimen. Responsibility for supplementation lies with Marco Antonio Pérez Espinoza, who is cooperating with the ongoing review.
Bruno Surace has called for the fight’s result to be overturned, asserting that he defeated Munguía fairly in their previous encounter and that the rematch was compromised.
If the B-sample confirms the presence of banned substances, Munguía could face a suspension ranging from six months to a year, and the bout may be declared a no-contest.
The boxing community awaits the B-sample results to determine the next steps in this developing situation.
