Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez returns to the ring this Saturday to face Chris Billam-Smith in an important cruiserweight unification fight. This showdown, which will be streamed live and free on DAZN, marks his first appearance since winning the WBA cruiserweight title in May. With his win over Arsen Goulamirian, Ramirez made history as the first Mexican to win a world championship in the 200-pound class.
Focus on Billam-Smith, but with an eye on Dorticós
Although Ramirez’ s attention is completely focused on Billam-Smith, the WBA champion has not lost sight of the challenge posed by Cuban Yuniel Dorticos, considered the mandatory title challenger. Dorticos, who originally was to be the next opponent, agreed to give up the spot for this unification fight to take place. However, the agreement includes the condition that the winner must face Dorticos next.
“Right now, my total focus is on Billam-Smith,” Ramirez commented. “But, of course, I have Dorticos in my plans for the future.”
Ramirez is aware of the danger posed by Dorticos, but says his focus is on the upcoming fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Learning from the Past
Ramirez’ s past experience in the Middle East was not the best. In 2022, he suffered a loss to Dmitry Bivol in Abu Dhabi. However, the Mexican boxer feels more motivated than ever for this new opportunity. “This is a great opportunity and I feel very grateful for it. This time, my performance will be different.” Ramirez expressed with confidence.
Great Plans Ahead
Ramirez has already made history as the first Mexican to win titles in two divisions: super middleweight and cruiserweight. However, the Mexican is not stopping there. He is considering the possibility of moving up to the heavyweight division in the near future.
“What really motivates me is to be world champion in several categories. I’m just getting started,” Ramirez explained.
A Tough Test Ahead
Chris Billam-Smith is no easy opponent. Known for his unstoppable aggressiveness and powerful punching power, the Brit has established himself as a world champion. Ramirez respects Billam-Smith’s skills, but remains determined to prove he is ready to face even bigger challenges. “Billam-Smith is one of the best and has earned his title. But I’m ready to prove that I’m here to achieve even bigger things,”said Ramirez.
Saudi Arabia: The New Boxing Epicenter
As more major fights are held in Saudi Arabia, Ramirez highlights the country’s growing relevance in the boxing world. “This is incredible for boxing,” he commented. “It gives a lot of attention and energy to the sport. The fans will love it.”
With all eyes on him, Ramirez will defend his cruiserweight crown and possibly move closer to a showdown with Dorticos in the near future.
