Matías vs. Smith
The atmosphere in Brooklyn has officially reached a fever pitch. On Thursday, Puerto Rican WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Subriel “EL ORGULLO DE MATERNILLO” Matías (23-2-0)and undefeated British challenger Dalton Smith (18-0-0) faced off in a tense final press conference. The verbal sparring set the stage for a massive showdown this Saturday, December 10, at the Barclays Center.
A War of Words and National Pride
Tensions are high between the two camps. Matías, known for his knockout power, did not mince words regarding his opponent. Addressing the rowdy British fans, the champion issued a chilling warning.
“I like the energy the fans bring. But you will stay screaming in the stands while Dalton has to back up your passion,” Matías said. He then escalated the rhetoric significantly. “I am going to bring out the little girl inside him and them. I want them to keep that energy because on Saturday, that is exactly what will happen.”
The Challenger Remains Unfazed
On the other hand, Dalton Smith appeared laser-focused on his childhood dream. Despite the champion’s taunts, Smith directed his gratitude toward the fans who traveled from Great Britain.
“There have been peaks and valleys during the preparation, but I have one job: To be world champion,” Smith declared. “I have had no distractions. You will see why English fans are the best in the world.”
Promoters Clash Over Ticket Sales
The rivalry extended beyond the fighters. Matchroom Sports CEO Eddie Hearn challenged the local turnout, claiming he heard more noise from Sheffield than Puerto Rico. “Where are the Boricuas? I am sure there will be more British fans this Saturday,” Hearn taunted.
However, Juan Orengo of Fresh Productions dismissed the concern. “I am not worried about tickets at all. That is how we Hispanics are; we leave things for the last minute.”
