Mexican boxing legend Julio César Chávez is stepping into a new ring—this time, to lead a nationwide initiative against drug addiction. On March 28, 2025, Chávez joined Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at the “La Mañanera del Pueblo” press conference to announce the upcoming National Boxing Class, set for April 6, 2025. This event, organized by the Mexican government in collaboration with the World Boxing Council (WBC), aims to combat drug use through the discipline and community of boxing.
Chávez, who has been sober for over 16 years, expressed his gratitude during the conference:
“Honestly, Madam President, thank you very much for this tremendous work against addictions, since Mexico is unfortunately going through difficult times, where there is a lot of drug addiction, where there is a lot of fentanyl that kills, not only destroys, but kills many people. Thank you for stepping into the ring against addictions.”
The National Boxing Class is anticipated to be a historic event, with organizers estimating participation from around one million people across various plazas throughout the country.
The main venue will be Mexico City’s Zócalo, but activities will be led by governors in each state. Notable boxing figures, including Chávez, Óscar de la Hoya, and Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, are expected to participate.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán highlighted the significance of the event: “This coming April 6th, we will make history.
“We will turn Mexico into a unique place because never in the history of any sport, in any country, in any situation, has there been an event like the one that is about to happen: this National Boxing Class.”
This initiative aligns with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, emphasizing the role of sports in promoting social change.
Participants are encouraged to join the #WhiteCard campaign, symbolizing peace and unity through sports.
