In an unprecedented event, Nisa Rodriguez and her son will fight on the same Pro-Am card this Saturday in Riverhead, New York. This event marks the first time in the history of boxing in the United States that a professional boxing mother and son have shared the same bill.
Nisa Rodriguez and her son make history
Nisa “Sweet-Destruction” Rodriguez (4-0, 2 KOs), ranked No. 4 in the world by the WBA, will face German debutant Deborah Melhorn in a super welterweight fight.
The event, part of the Riverhead Fight Series, will be held at the historic Suffolk Theater, which has not hosted boxing since it opened in 1912.
The bill includes three professional fights and up to ten amateur bouts, highlighting local talent.
Nisa’s son Emerson is only 15 years old, has a 10-2 amateur record and is an honor student. He is 6-foot-1, 145 pounds and looks up to Tommy Hearns.
He has always been present in his mother’s career, following her to the gym and to her fights. “Fighting together seems like an incredible thing to me,” Rodriguez expressed, reflecting the special connection they share.
In addition to his career in the ring, Rodriguez is a full-time police officer with the New York Police Department.
His return to boxing, after a break due to injury and work commitments, demonstrates his strength and passion for the sport. “I am very grateful to fight on this billboard, especially with the opportunity for my son to be on it as well “she commented excitedly.
This event not only highlights the family bond, but also how boxing continues to evolve, incorporating human stories that enrich its legacy.
