On November 21, 1976, Venezuelan boxing legend Luis “Lumumba” Estaba successfully defended his WBC light flyweight title. He faced Mexican southpaw “Duende” Martinez and won by TKO in the 11th round. The bout took place at the iconic Nuevo Circo in Caracas, Venezuela. From Late Starter to Boxing Star
Luis Alberto Estaba was born on August 13, 1938 in Macuro, Venezuela. His resemblance to Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba gave him the nickname “Lumumba”. Surprisingly, Estaba began his professional boxing career at the age of 29. On February 28, 1967, he defeated Pedro Garcia by knockout in his debut.
At first, Estaba faced several obstacles, such as a loss to Natalio Jimenez in 1968. However, he immediately took revenge by defeating him in their rematch. This resilience became one of the most outstanding characteristics of his career, propelling him to greatness.
Promotion to the World Title
In 1975, Estaba captured the vacant WBC light flyweight title after knocking out Rafael Lovera in the fourth round. This victory made him the second world champion of the division. Over the next three years, he successfully defended his title 12 times. Among his most important victories were against Franco Udella, Rafael Pedroza and Netrnoi Vorasingh.
His exceptional performance led him to receive the title of Athlete of the Year in Venezuela in 1977. This recognition cemented his place as a true national hero.
The Last Chapter
In 1978, Estaba’s reign came to an end after a loss to Mexican Freddie Castillo. Shortly after, he attempted to regain the title against Netrnoi Vorasingh, but was defeated again. At the end of his career, Estaba amassed an impressive record of 41 wins, 9 losses and 2 draws, with 27 knockouts. He retired that same year due to Venezuelan laws that prevented boxers over the age of 40 from continuing in the ring.
