Oscar Collazo retains titles after bizarre stoppage over Jayson Vayson. The unified WBA and WBO minimumweight champion held onto his belts when Vayson’s corner abruptly stopped the fight in round seven, even though Vayson was still fighting back.
Oscar Collazo Retains Titles
Collazo (13-0, 10 KOs) looked composed throughout. After scoring a knockdown in round one via a counter right hook, he weathered Vayson’s body attack in round four. Then, Collazo switched gears, applying pressure in rounds six and seven, landing sharp combinations.
Vayson (14-2-1, 8 KOs), though behind, appeared resilient. He kept hunting Collazo’s body and fired back in close moments. His corner, however, believed he was in danger and pulled him out.
Vayson later said, “They thought I was groggy, but I wanted to fight … of course, I respect the corner’s decision. I felt the punches in my body, but I thought I could manage it.”
This stoppage came as a surprise. Fans and analysts questioned whether Vayson was actually unable to continue or simply susceptible.
Nonetheless, Collazo’s corner believed the title defense was earned. “I think it was a good stoppage,” Collazo said. “I was picking my shots and got it … the last three rounds I was breaking him down … I saw he was slowing down, … and I wanted to pick my shots … and it got stopped.”
Collazo’s rise has been fast. He first claimed the WBO minimumweight title in May 2023, then unified in November 2024 by capturing the WBA belt.
With this latest defense, his dominance at 105 lbs is undeniable.
