Just a month after his record-setting, four-second knockout. “The Big Boy” will collide with Marcos Brigagão
That didn’t take long.
One month after he set a new record for the fastest knockout in Karate Combat history, 36-year old Cuban Tae Kwon Do champion Robelis “The Big Boy” Despaigne (1-0 Karate Combat, 5-2 MMA) will return to “The Pit” to square off with Marcos “Ironside” Brigagão (0-0 Karate Combat, 17-7 MMA) at Karate Combat in Miami on Friday, Jan 24.
Despaigne, who signed with Karate Combat only two weeks after being released by the UFC following his second loss in The Octagon, landed a monstrous overhand right on Dominik Jedrzejczyk just four seconds into their Karate Combat matchup in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on December 19.
Jedrzejczyk was knocked unconscious from the right hand, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
Despaigne, a monstrous, 6-foot-7 inch native of Santiago de Cuba and resident of Orlando, Fla., won the bronze medal in Tae Kwon Do, in which he holds a fourth degree black belt, in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Despaigne’s speedy victory in his Karate Combat debut prompted many to agree that he has found a more suitable home than the UFC for his style of fighting.
Making his Karate Combat debut, Brigagão is a 28-year-old Muay Thai specialist fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He will look to bounce back from two consecutive losses – a second round (4:58) submission (arm triangle choke) in an MMA bout against Bruno Lopes last January 27, followed by a first round (4:20) knockout (punches) in a bareknuckle MMA fight promoted by UFC legend Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal, on November 15.
To date, Brigagão has earnec 12 of his 17 MMA victories by way of knockout.
