UFC Fight Night event at Arena Ciudad de México will also feature Rodríguez’s fellow Mexican fighters Yazmin Jauregui and Edgar Cháirez
Mexican flyweight (125 pounds/56 kilograms) star Ronaldo “Lazy Boy” Rodríguez (17-2) will return to The Octagon against Peru’s Kevin “El Gallo Negro” Borjas (9-3) at UFC Fight Night at Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City on Saturday, March 29.
Ranked as high as number 25 in the world in the flyweight division and touted as a potential star on the horizon, the charismatic, 25-year-old Rodríguez, born in small-town Chiapas, is looking for his eighth straight victory after defeating Ode Osbourne by unanimous decision at UFC 306 last September 14.
Rodríguez made headlines last year after claiming his father was legendary Hall of Fame boxing icon, Julio César Chávez, Sr. The statement was later revealed to be a joke when the two met in-person, and a reference by Rodríguez to the similarity between both fighters’ noses that are battle-scarred.
The 27-year-old Borjas hails from Lima, and is looking to bounce back from two consecutive defeats in 2024.
Thus far, Borjas has earned all but one of his professional wins by way of (T)KO. He signed with the UFC after earning a unanimous decision victory over Victor Dias on a ‘Contender Series’ fight card last August.
Borjas was scheduled to square off with another Mexican competitor – Edgar Chairez – at “Noche UFC” last September 14, but was forced to withdraw from the matchup due to an injury.
Yauregui (11-2) of Tijuana, Baja California will face Brazil’s Dione Barbosa (7-3) in a women’s strawweight (115 pounds/52 kilograms) matchup.
Cháirez (11-6) of Mexicali, Baja California, will do battle with C.J. Vergara (12-6-1) of Laredo, Texas in a flyweight matchup.
