After a series of rumors about a potential boxing match against Katie Taylor, Ronda Rousey comes out of retirement to return to the discipline that made her famous worldwide.
The former UFC champion will face Gina Carano on May 16
The announcement was made by Netflix in partnership with Most Valuable Promotions on Tuesday morning.
Rousey began her career in judo, winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. She later transitioned to MMA, where she captured titles in Strikeforce and the UFC.
After an undefeated streak of 12 fights, she lost her title to Holly Holm at UFC 193. Months later, she returned to face then-champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, where she was knocked out in the first round.
During her time away, she focused on a career in Hollywood and in WWE, the largest professional wrestling organization, where she became a champion.
Carano is considered one of the pioneers of MMA, back when the sport did not have the visibility and importance it has today. Gina began training in Muay Thai, turned professional, and compiled a record of 12-1-1.
It was only a matter of time before she transitioned to MMA in 2006. She went on to compile an undefeated record of seven fights, three of them in EliteXC. In her final bout, she faced Cris Cyborg to determine the first Strikeforce featherweight champion, losing by knockout.
During her time away from combat sports, she focused on the big screen, standing out in the remake of American Gladiators and in her role on The Mandalorian.
Rousey vs. Carano will take place on May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
