Boxing’s Sole Governing Body
Madrid, Spain -UmarKremlev, president of the International Boxing Association(IBA), insists that the IBA is the “Sole Governing Body of Boxing”. This, despite the IOC suspension in June 2023. Kremlev argues that the IBA remains the only one with the expertise and capacity to manage boxing competitions. He asserts that the IOC’s decision is politically motivated, not an objective assessment of the IBA.
Boxing and the Olympic Games: A Growing Conflict
Following the irregularities detected in the IBA, the IOC took control of the Olympic boxing tournaments. Although the IBA has been excluded from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Kremlev defends that the IBA is the only organization that can guarantee a stable future for boxers. “The IBA is the true home of boxing,” he stresses, highlighting its commitment to the sport as a symbol of unity, without political interference.
IBA’s Long Fight Against IOC Influence
Kremlev also used his year-end message to reaffirm his position. He assures that the IBA will continue to fight for the rights of boxers. “Our boxers will compete under their flags and anthems, no matter what,” he stated.
World Boxing: A New Competitor on the Stage
Meanwhile, several key federations, such as those of the United States, England, Brazil and India, have formed a new body: World Boxing. This body seeks to replace the IBA and obtain IOC recognition for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Impact on the Future of Olympic Boxing
The dispute between the IBA and the IOC could change the course of Olympic boxing. It could also affect the overall structure of the sport. It all depends on how this conflict is resolved.
