Tijuana, Baja California – The Honorable Boxing, Kickboxing, and Mixed Martial Arts Commission of Tijuana held its final event this past weekend, marking the conclusion of a transformative era under the leadership of Alberto Martínez Villaseñor. As he steps down as president, Martínez reflects on a tenure defined by growth, responsibility, and a commitment to fighter safety.
Martínez’s presidency began in January 2023, after being appointed by Tijuana’s mayor, Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, during a closed-door session. Over the course of his administration, he oversaw approximately 40 boxing events, 12 mixed martial arts events, and 3 Muay Thai events throughout 2024 alone. Each event not only showcased thrilling bouts but also involved championships that drew enthusiastic crowds.
The administration was good and we are leaving happy,” Martínez commented. “In 2024, we had an incredible response from both fighters and fans alike.”
A Leader with Experience
This marked Martínez’s fifth year in a leadership role, either as president or vice president of the commission. His extensive background includes notable positions such as State Delegate for the Federation of Boxing Commissions of the Mexican Republic and earlier stints as president of the Boxing Commission. This diverse experience laid the groundwork for his successful strategies, focusing on regulation and transparency.
You always learn new things, there are mistakes, a little bit of everything,” he acknowledged. “But the main goal has always been the protection of our fighters and ensuring the integrity of our events.”
Highlights from Recent Events
The commission’s final event featured several exciting bouts held at Salon La Candelaria in Tijuana, with the action showcasing a variety of fighters and outcomes. Some highlights from the recent matches include:
- Benigno Gaona Diaz vs. Edgar Daniel Ahumada: A thrilling contest ending in a TKO victory for Gaona Diaz in the third round.
- Gabriel Anthony Azua vs. Enrique Cuenca Estrada: Azua secured a TKO victory, demonstrating his skill and stamina.
- Misael Sanchez vs. Luis Rodriguez Aguilar: Sanchez delivered a powerful performance, achieving a TKO in just under a minute.
Looking Ahead: A New Administration
As the new administration takes over, Martínez remains optimistic about the future of boxing and mixed martial arts in Tijuana. His successor, Alberto Carlos Ramos Hernández, aims to promote the sport in neighborhoods where it has previously been overlooked. The initiative includes reviving the Tijuana Municipal Championship, emphasizing grassroots engagement and amateur competitions.
We are going to work separately but still as a team,” Martínez said about the new commission’s goals. “The most important thing is to safeguard the integrity of the boxers and provide a quality experience for our spectators.”
With a fresh leadership team in place, including new commissioners for boxing and mixed martial arts, Tijuana’s combat sports community is poised for further growth and excitement.
Commitment to Fighter Safety
One of the pillars of Martínez’s tenure has been a steadfast commitment to the safety and welfare of fighters. The regulations established during his leadership emphasize safeguarding physical integrity and preventing fraudulent practices in the industry. This dedication not only enhances the credibility of the sport but also ensures a positive experience for both fighters and fans.
The collaboration with local promoters and organizations has also been crucial in fostering a supportive environment for combat sports, a focus that Martínez is proud of.
A Legacy of Excellence
As Alberto Martínez Villaseñor steps down, his legacy will be defined not only by the numbers—over 519 bouts officiated during his tenure—but also by the integrity and passion he brought to the role. His impact will be felt long after his departure, as the foundations laid during his presidency continue to shape the future of boxing and mixed martial arts in Tijuana.
With the promise of new initiatives and a dedicated team, the city is set to become a vibrant hub for combat sports, carrying forward the vision that Martínez championed during his time at the helm. The journey continues, and Tijuana is ready for the next chapter.
