Former middleweight champion questions the “loyalty” of Mexican Americans who show off the Mexican flag, tells them to “go back”
Apparently, former UFC star and former middleweight champion Sean Strickland doesn’t feel Hispanic American should demonstrate pride in their heritage.
The outspoken 33-year-old Anaheim, California native, who handed over his middleweight belt to Dricus Du Plessis after losing a split decision to Du Plessis at UFC 297 on January 20, took to X on April 29 to express his displeasure in any American-born Latinos – particularly Mexican Americans – displaying a flag of the country where their ancestors were born.
Strickland’s post that labels foreign countries as “corrupt” is not just offending, but also hypocritical. Where are “Hispanics born in America” supposed to “go back” to?
Based on his logic, though, Mexican American fighters like Raul Rosas, Jr., who was born in New Mexico, have no business flying the Mexican flag, which is exactly what “El Niño Problema” does.
The UFC seemingly wants the 19-year-old rising star to do exactly this, too. The promotion loaded it’s first-ever “Noche UFC” card last Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 2023, with Mexican and Mexican American talent, and Rosas, Jr. was one of those fighters it featured.
