Vallejos Crushes Chikadze via Spinning Backfist
Kevin Vallejos is rapidly turning into the most exciting prospect in the featherweight division. His debut year in the promotion has been nothing short of historic. In the highly anticipated co-main event of UFC on ESPN 73, Vallejos (17-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) faced the biggest challenge of his young career.
A Historic Knockout Victory
Vallejos took on Giga Chikadze, a dangerous and experienced featherweight contender. notably, Chikadze held a reputation for durability, having never been knocked out in his entire professional career. However, that impressive statistic was shattered instantly in the second round.
Vallejos found the chin with a lightning-fast spinning backfist. This devastating strike sent Chikadze (15-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) crashing violently to the canvas. The fight officially ended at 1:29 in Round 2, marking a viral moment for the rising star.
Surviving The First Round
The highlight-reel finish did not come easily. The first round was incredibly competitive and difficult for the newcomer. Chikadze gave Vallejos serious trouble with his signature “Giga Kick” attacks. These powerful strikes left visible, red welts on the right side of Vallejos’ body.
Consequently, the momentum clearly favored the veteran early on. Chikadze effectively won the opening frame on all three judges’ scorecards. Therefore, Vallejos needed to make a drastic adjustment to stay in the fight.
Finding The Perfect Shot
Remaining patient, Vallejos continued to march forward aggressively in the second frame. He hunted for his own openings while pressuring his opponent against the cage. The fight came to a screeching halt when Vallejos charged in.
As Chikadze backed into the fence, Vallejos unleashed the spinning backfist. Once Chikadze hit the mat, Vallejos added a few vicious elbows until referee Mark Smith pulled him off.
Targeting Cub Swanson Next
During his post-fight interview, Vallejos wasted no time planning his future. He boldly called for an April matchup against legend Cub Swanson, who was ironically in Chikadze’s corner that night.
Vallejos began his UFC run with a stoppage of Seung Woo Choi in March. After a decision win over Danny Silva, he closes his first year with a third victory, extending his winning streak to six.
