WBC Convention Shines in Hamburg
The WBC Convention Shines in Hamburg as the global boxing community gathered at the Grand Elysee Hotel for the 62nd World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention. Thomas Putz, President of the German Boxing Federation, opened the event with high praise for the WBC’s dedication to boxers and their well-being. The convention set the stage for a memorable celebration of inspiration, unity, and the spirit of boxing.
Inspirational Champions
Sibling world champions Gabriela and Sebastian Fundora received warm applause as they shared their journey. Gabriela recalled how former champion Shawn Porter inspired her at the Acapulco Convention. Both Fundoras expressed excitement about their plans for a stellar 2025.
WBC champion Skye Nicolson highlighted the importance of breaking barriers in women’s boxing. Joined by Shawn Porter, she emphasized the role of champions in spreading peace worldwide.
German pride shone through WBC atomweight champion Tina Rupprecht, who expressed her joy at hosting the convention in her home country.
Honoring Heroes
Legendary boxer Miguel Cotto awarded the “Bravest Man on Earth” Golden Glove to Bridger Walker. The honor was later passed to Abdu Rozik, inspiring many with his achievements despite physical challenges.
Adonis Stevenson, who overcame an 18-day coma, received an award from Badou Jack, recognizing his perseverance. Billy Dib, the 2023 Champion of Hope, shared his emotional journey of surviving cancer and honored Bruno Macho, a leukemia survivor turned undefeated prospect.
Memorable Moments
The convention featured a moving tribute to Israel Vázquez, with funds raised for his family. Mauricio Sulaiman, WBC President, shared heartfelt memories of his mother and expressed gratitude for the boxing community’s support.
The event concluded with champions singing the WBC anthem, “We Are the World,” and a colorful flag ceremony.
