Xander Zayas
The atmosphere in San Juan is electric. WBO Super Welterweight World Champion Xander Zayas has returned to his homeland, receiving a hero’s welcome that echoes the legends of the past. The 23-year-old boxing prodigy has enjoyed a deeply emotional week with his people, just days before his historic unification bout at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico.
A Hero’s Welcome in San Juan
For Zayas, this trip is about more than just boxing; it is about community. The Sunrise, Florida resident recently visited the Boys & Girls Clubs at the Las Margaritas residential complex in San Juan. This center has transformed the lives of over 80,000 young residents. During the visit, the community unveiled a vibrant mural featuring Zayas’ face alongside the inspiring phrase, “Si lo puedes soñar” (If you can dream it).
“Not everyone makes it here, and being able to do so means a lot to me,” Zayas told the press. “It is the place that saw me grow, and it has always been an honor to represent where I am from.”
From Local Dreamer to Top Rank Star
Zayas’ journey to the top has been nothing short of cinematic. Born in 2002, he began boxing in the Cantera neighborhood to defend himself against bullies. He quickly discovered a natural talent, winning his first amateur fight at age six. Although he moved to Florida at age eleven, his heart remained in Puerto Rico.
He grew up idolizing icons like Miguel Cotto and Felix “Tito” Trinidad. By age 16, his skills were undeniable. Consequently, he became the youngest boxer ever to sign with Top Rank in its 53-year history. Promoter Bob Arum immediately recognized his maturity, even comparing his potential to Oscar De La Hoya.
The Road to the Championship
Zayas has lived up to the hype. He maintained an unblemished record through a steady rise in the ranks. His breakout moment finally arrived in July 2025 at Madison Square Garden. There, he dominated Jorge Garcia Perez to capture the vacant WBO light middleweight title via unanimous decision.
Currently boasting a professional record of 22-0 with 13 knockouts, Zayas is no longer just a prospect. He is a reigning world champion.
Unification at the Coliseo
Now, all eyes are on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Zayas will step into the ring to face Abass Baraou, the German WBA champion. This unification bout represents a major milestone in the 154-pound division.
Zayas is ready to make a statement. He has adjusted his style, perfected his technique, and embraced his role as the next great Puerto Rican superstar. When the bell rings this Saturday, he won’t just be fighting for a belt; he will be fighting to cement his legacy.
