In a groundbreaking event, Nisa Rodriguez and her son will fight on the same Pro-Am card this Saturday in Riverhead, New York. This unique occurrence marks the first time a professional boxer mother and her amateur boxing son share the same fight card in U.S. boxing history.
Nisa Rodriguez and Son Make Boxing History
Nisa “Sweet-Destruction” Rodriguez (4-0, 2 KOs), ranked No. 4 globally by the WBA, will face German debutant Deborah Melhorn in a junior middleweight bout.
The event, part of the “Riverhead Fight Series,” will be held at the historic Suffolk Theater, which is hosting its first boxing event since opening in 1912.
The card includes three professional fights and up to ten amateur bouts, featuring local talents.
Rodriguez’s 15-year-old son, Emerson, boasts a 10-2 amateur record and is an honor student. Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 145 pounds, he draws inspiration from his favorite fighter, Tommy Hearns.
Emerson has been a constant presence in his mother’s boxing journey, often accompanying her to the gym and her fights. “I think fighting together is kind of dope,” Rodriguez shared, highlighting their close bond.
Beyond the ring, Rodriguez serves as a full-time New York Police Department officer. Her return to boxing after a hiatus due to injuries and work commitments showcases her resilience and dedication to the sport.
“I’m so grateful to be fighting on this card with the opportunity to have my son fighting on the same show,” she expressed.
This event not only highlights the unique mother-son duo but also underscores the evolving landscape of boxing, where family legacies and personal stories add depth to the sport’s rich tapestry.
