Farewell to DTLA’s Iconic Mayan Theater
For more than two decades, Lucha VaVoom de La Liz has electrified Los Angeles with its dazzling fusion of lucha libre wrestling and burlesque at the legendary Mayan Theater. But on Friday, August 22 at 8 p.m., the curtain will close on this chapter as the venue prepares for its final run after 35 years under its current management.
The End of an Era in Downtown L.A.
The Mayan, a 98-year-old venue and cultural landmark, will shut its doors at the end of September. Its president, Sammy Chao, shared that the decision came after years of unrelenting challenges. “We’ve done everything possible to stay afloat, adapt and serve,” Chao said. “This decision is not one of defeat, but of necessity.”
While the Mayan’s closure marks the end of a historic era, Lucha VaVoom promises to deliver an unforgettable send-off with “The Good, the Bad and the Fabulous.”
Magno Reflects on Two Decades of VaVoom
One of the show’s stars, Magno (Oscar Vasquez), has been with Lucha VaVoom since he was 19. Now 41, he admits this farewell is bittersweet. “Mentally, it’s hard because I’ve been here for 21 years. To me, it’s very special,” he said. Known for his time with WWE before joining VaVoom, Magno is determined to embody the larger-than-life energy fans expect on this emotional night.
A Bond Beyond the Stage
For VaVoom founder Liz Fairbairn, the Mayan has been more than just a venue—it’s been family. “Sammy has been nurturing and supportive of us,” she said. “I honestly couldn’t see us still being here if it wasn’t for him.”
As the Mayan prepares to close, Lucha VaVoom will make sure its legacy shines one last time, reminding Los Angeles why lucha libre, burlesque, and pure spectacle are a match made in heaven.
