Born in San Juan and fighting out of Danbury, Connecticut, the 29-year-old boasts a truly unbelievable background. Melendez is undefeated in kickboxing and Karate Combat. Furthermore, he hones his striking alongside famed MMA champions Alex Pereira and Glover Teixeira. He holds a second-degree Taekwondo black belt and a traditional Karate black belt. Moreover, he previously competed for the Puerto Rican National Taekwondo team. Surprisingly, he is also a talented breakdancer.
From Submarines to Strikes
Perhaps his most shocking credential is his brilliant intellect. Melendez earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University. Afterward, he worked as a U.S. Navy contractor building nuclear submarines! However, he quickly quit his engineering job last year to pursue his MMA career full-time.
