Georges St-Pierre, one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, will have his story on the big screen.
A film about the Canadian MMA icon is in development, with Quebec-native director Thomas Soto directing the project.
‘We had been considering telling my story for a while, and when we found this team, it became clear to us that we wanted to tell it in a creative and innovative way,’ St-Pierre told Variety.
The biographical film will tell the story of St-Pierre from Saint-Isidore, Quebec, to his time in the octagon, where he became a two-division UFC champion.
The filmmakers in charge of the project are not looking to showcase him as a global icon, but rather to show Georges, the man away from the spotlight and the octagon.
The project is led by executive producers Brandon St-Jacques and Jean-Christophe Pelchat, along with producers Bruno Rosato and Vito Balenzano. The cast will be announced at a later date.
Soto was nominated for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television’s Emerging Star Award. As a screenwriter, director, and cinematographer, his notable works include the short film Hold The Lighthouse, the final season of the CBS TV series Six Degrees, and the Crave series Still I Rise.
“I want to tell the story of Georges, the person behind GSP, in an intimate, honest, and deeply human way,” Soto said in a statement. “For me, bringing this story to the world is both a privilege and a responsibility.”
St-Pierre is widely recognized as one of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters of all time. A former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion, he retired with a professional record of 26-2.
Following his retirement, he has appeared in films such as Captain America: Winter Soldier and Kickboxing: Vengeance. In addition to his career as a fighter, St-Pierre is a businessman, philanthropist, and cultural ambassador for Quebec and Canada.
