Javier Quintero has found a different way to understand fighting at Fighting Nerds: less emotion, more analysis, and the confidence to believe he belongs at the highest level.
For Javier Quintero, training alongside UFC level fighters changed the way he viewed the sport’s elite.
Coming from Argentina, where relatively few fighters have reached the UFC, Quintero initially saw those athletes as something distant. Sharing the room with them changed that perception.
“They’re normal people, completely human, just like us,” Quintero told Fajador. “There’s nothing that makes them different or something you should idolize. They’re normal people who do extraordinary things.”
For him, the difference lies in consistency.
“They keep their word. They do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. It sounds simple, but I think that’s the secret.”
Taking Emotion Out of the Fight
One of the biggest changes in Quintero’s development at Fighting Nerds has been learning to detach himself emotionally from competition.
Instead of becoming consumed by the moment, he tries to understand what is happening inside the cage.
“At the end of the day, we’re two human beings,” Quintero explained. “At one moment, one is the hunter and the other is the prey, and those roles change throughout the fight.”
That perspective has made reading opponents and understanding timing central parts of his game.
“You can read the fight because you leave emotion aside. You have to be analytical when things get difficult,” he said. “We study timing, time and the logic of fighting a lot.”
Quintero believes that approach has played a direct role in his recent finishes.
“I think that’s why I’ve been finding knockouts. The knockout comes from the right timing.”
Still, he does not believe his development is complete.
“I still owe myself a three-round fight that becomes a war,” Quintero said. “But I think I have the competitive maturity, the sporting maturity and the calmness in critical moments to have an opportunity in the big leagues.”
Becoming a Fighting Nerd
Adapting to the Fighting Nerds system initially created a different type of pressure.
During his first sparring sessions, Quintero was focused on executing everything exactly as the team expected.
“I wanted to do everything perfectly, following the Fighting Nerds game,” he said.
He compares coach Pablo Sucupira’s philosophy to Pep Guardiola’s approach to football.
“If you didn’t have the team’s game, he wouldn’t let you represent the team,” Quintero explained. “He wanted the athlete to truly have the Fighting Nerds style.”
Eventually, what initially required conscious effort became natural.
“I started digesting it, processing it and making it part of my own style,” he said. “Today I don’t think about it anymore. I just am.”
That distinction matters to Quintero.
“I don’t feel pressure because I am a Fighting Nerd. When you truly are one, you don’t have to think about it.”
Ready to Take What Is His
Quintero still describes himself as a calculated fighter.
He wants to observe, measure and understand what is in front of him before making decisions. But if a major opportunity arrives, he believes people will see something else as well.
A more aggressive version.
“I think people would find a Javier Quintero who is much more aggressive and much more determined to take what he believes is his,” he said.
The analytical side will remain.
“I’m still calculated. I’m going to measure things at the beginning,” Quintero added. “But today I’m in a position where I’m determined to move forward.”
After learning how to remove emotion from the fight, understand the game around him and make the Fighting Nerds system his own, Quintero believes the next step is no longer simply about proving that he belongs.
It is about taking the opportunity when it comes.
“Today, I’m determined to take everything.”
