Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez returns to the ring this Saturday for a major cruiserweight unification fight against Chris Billam-Smith. The bout, which airs live and free on DAZN, marks his first fight since winning the WBA Cruiserweight title in May. Ramírez’s victory over Arsen Goulamirian made him the first Mexican fighter to hold a world championship at 200 pounds.
Focused on Billam-Smith, But Eyeing Dorticós
Ramírez’s focus is set on Billam-Smith, but the WBA champion has not forgotten about the looming challenge from Cuban knockout artist Yuniel Dorticós. Dorticós, ranked as the mandatory challenger for the WBA title, agreed to step aside for this unification fight. However, the deal includes a commitment for the winner to face Dorticós next.
“Right now, I’m fully focused on Billam-Smith,” said Ramírez. “But of course, I have Dorticós in my future plans.”
Ramírez recognizes the danger that Dorticós represents but insists on staying locked in for his upcoming fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Learning from the Past
Ramírez’s previous experience in the Middle East wasn’t a positive one. In 2022, he lost to Dmitry Bivol in Abu Dhabi. But Ramírez feels more motivated than ever for this return. “It’s a big opportunity, and I’m thankful for it. This time, I’ll show a different performance,” he said confidently.
Big Plans Ahead
Having already made history as the First Mexican to win titles in both the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions, Ramírez is not stopping there. He’s considering a move up to the heavyweight division in the future.
“Becoming a world champion in different categories is what motivates me,” Ramírez explained. “I’m just getting started.”
A Tough Test Ahead
Chris Billam-Smith is no easy opponent. Known for his relentless aggression and heavy hands, the Brit has earned his place as a world champion. Ramírez respects Billam-Smith’s skills but remains determined to prove he’s ready for even greater challenges. “Billam-Smith is one of the best out there, and he’s earned his title. But I’m ready to show that I’m here for bigger things,” Ramírez declared.
Saudi Arabia: The New Boxing Hub
As more big fights head to Saudi Arabia, Ramírez sees the country’s growing importance in the sport. “This is great for boxing,” he said. “It brings a lot of attention and energy to the sport. The fans will love it.”
All eyes will be on Ramírez as he defends his cruiserweight crown and moves closer to a potential showdown with Dorticós.
