AEW Winter Is Coming
All Elite Wrestling is packing up and heading south this winter. On December 9, the promotion takes its annual “Winter Is Coming” Dynamite special to Monterrey, Mexico.
Breaking New Ground Beyond Mexico City
Mexico City usually gets all the love as the undisputed capital of lucha libre. But AEW is clearly looking to branch out. After building a solid Mexican fanbase through a CMLL partnership and running Grand Slam shows at Arena Mexico, the company is testing fresh waters. Monterrey actually has a thriving indie scene and regularly hosts AAA, making the massive 17,500-seat Arena Monterrey a perfect fit for a crowd that really knows its wrestling.
A History of Shocking Dynamite Moments
“Winter Is Coming” isn’t just another TV taping. It’s treated like a major event. Think back to the 2020 debut: Kenny Omega snatched the world title from Jon Moxley, and Sting made his literal jaw-dropping first appearance. A year later, Hangman Page and Bryan Danielson went to a legendary one-hour draw. It’s the kind of show where major title changes and heavy-hitting matches are simply the standard.
Local Heroes and Massive Implications
We don’t have the card for this Dynamite and Collision double-taping just yet, but the possibilities are huge. The loudest speculation involves Andrade. Could this be where he finally cashes in his Casino Gauntlet contract for a world title shot? It’s also worth noting that CMLL world heavyweight champion Hechicero is a Monterrey native. Giving him a high-profile spot feels like a no-brainer, alongside other lucha stars like Mistico and Persephone to really pop the local crowd.
The Final Stop Before Worlds End
With the Worlds End pay-per-view creeping up fast on December 19, the Monterrey show is going to be a crucial pit stop. Expect some intense, high-stakes Continental Classic tournament matches to finalize the brackets before the big event.
