Dominican Boxing
The Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games brought historic victories for Dominican boxing champions. Seven athletes fought their way to gold medals. Their incredible success shines a bright light on the immense talent within the country. Yet, it also exposes a harsh reality. These fighters need much more financial and structural support from their nation to reach their full potential.
A Cry for Better Facilities
Meanwhile, Central Boxing hosted a powerful recognition event for these seven gold medalists. The gathering celebrated their massive sacrifice, iron discipline, and sheer perseverance. Raquel del Río, president of Central Boxing, delivered a clear and urgent message. She stressed that society must truly back these athletes. We cannot simply cheer for the final victory while ignoring the grueling process behind it. Del Río pointed out a tough truth about the current landscape. Dominican boxing has achieved massive global success, but the sport still lacks a proper home. The athletes do not have decent training spaces or adequate housing to support their daily routines.
“Today, as a society, we have a commitment to them. We must fulfill our obligations to them in the same way they fulfilled theirs. We cannot celebrate the victory if we do not participate and support them throughout the process,” said Raquel del Río, president of Central Boxing.
The event drew major figures from the sports world. Minister of Sports and Recreation Kelvin Cruz attended the ceremony. He was joined the dirigente deportivo Bienvenido Solano and Rubén García from la Federación Dominicana de Boxeo. Together, these leaders sat down with the athletes, coaches, and families. They listened closely as the champions shared personal stories of overcoming massive hurdles. As a result, everyone in the room agreed on one vital point. The country must expand training programs and support these fighters across every stage of their careers. Central Boxing pledged to keep fighting alongside the athletes to elevate the sport worldwide.
The celebrated gold medalists share inspiring backgrounds built on pure grit. Estefany Almanzar made history previously and now aims for Olympic glory. Junior Alcántara confidently added the 2026 gold to his impressive collection, which includes a Paris 2024 Olympic bronze. Ezequiel Medina, the only National District gold medalist, perfectly balances his rigorous boxing training with studying foreign languages.
Fighting for a Brighter Future
Other amazing champions also fight for deeply personal reasons. Miguel Ángel Encarnación known as “Boya” and representing Sabana Grande de Boyá, has been a member of the national team for six years. Among his main goals are improving his mother’s living conditions and buying her a house. Ricardo Cuello nicknamed “Ocho” and “Bola de Billar”, represents the Los Mina sector and is part of the new generation of boxers seeking to consolidate the country in the regional arena and Noel Pacheco, known as “Ñapa” and a native of Maquitería, Villa Duarte, rejoined the national team before the Games and ended up winning his division championship. He is also the uncle of former world champion Erick Rosa, “El Mini Pacman.”
Meanwhile, Cristian Pinales, from La Romana, completes the group of champions. The athlete has established himself among the leading Latin American exponents of the discipline and shares with the late Pedro Julio Nolasco the distinction of having won an Olympic medal for that province.
Securing the Next Generation
During the meeting, the athletes shared their experiences, talked about the obstacles they faced during their preparation, and thanked their coaches, families, and communities for their support.
“If we came from a poor neighborhood and made it this far, all we need is discipline and not giving up,” one of the champions said during the conversation.
Central Boxing reaffirmed its commitment to the comprehensive training of boxers and to sport as a tool for social transformation, highlighting that the stories of these champions represent an example of perseverance for new generations.
