Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs) showed once again why he’s one of boxing’s brightest stars, delivering a devastating third-round knockout over Pedro Guevara (42-6-1, 22 KOs) to successfully defend his WBC Super Flyweight Title on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
The 24-year-old Rodriguez towered over the 35-year-old Guevara, using his size and power to take control from the opening bell. Despite being the smaller man, Guevara opted to engage in a slugfest with Rodriguez rather than relying on movement or defense, which ultimately sealed his fate.
In the third round, Rodriguez backed Guevara against the ropes and delivered a vicious left hook that sent Guevara crashing to the canvas. Guevara managed to beat the count but walked right into another barrage of punches. Rodriguez dropped him once more with a left uppercut that sent Guevara face-first to the mat. Referee Ricky Gonzalez quickly stopped the fight at 2:47 of the third round, giving Rodriguez a TKO victory.
This win extends Rodriguez’s undefeated streak and solidifies his dominance in the super flyweight division. After the fight, Rodriguez expressed his desire for a unification bout with another champion in the division. If not, he is open to facing the legendary Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, though some fans expressed concerns about the 37-year-old Gonzalez’s age, with many preferring Rodriguez to move up in weight.
Rodriguez’s impressive size and power have made him a standout in the lighter weight classes, and with potential matchups against stars like Junto Nakatani or Naoya Inoue on the horizon, the future looks even brighter for the young champion.
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez remains one of boxing’s most exciting talents, and with his continued rise, fans are eagerly anticipating his next move in the ring.
