José Hernández Wins Mexico’s First Gold in Abu Dhabi
At the 2025 Youth MMA World Championship in Abu Dhabi, José Hernández delivered a groundbreaking performance. Competing in the 52 kg division, Hernández received a bye in the opening round. He then defeated Lebanon’s Marco Bou in the semifinal. In the final, he secured a unanimous decision win over Ukraine’s Yaroslav Bubela.
This victory marked Mexico’s first-ever gold medal at the prestigious international tournament. More importantly, it put the national flag on the top step of the podium in Abu Dhabi.
More Medals for Mexico
The gold wasn’t the only cause for celebration. Emiliano Velázquez earned a bronze medal in the 44 kg division. After defeating Armenia’s Arshak Ghazaryan in the quarterfinals, Velázquez faced Tunisia’s Mehdi Jemaa. Although he lost in the semifinals, he proudly secured a spot on the podium.
Earlier in the event, 11-year-old Samantha Martínez brought home silver in the 48 kg category. Her journey included a strong performance leading to the finals, where she narrowly lost to a fighter from the UAE. Still, her silver medal marked Mexico’s first podium finish of the tournament.
