Richard Torrez Jr. re-elected to the World Boxing Athletes Committee in Liverpool, as boxers voted to restore his seat. The 2025 World Boxing Championships hosted the election among athletes from around the globe. The committee will now include six members, with Torrez among them.
Richard Torrez Jr. Re-Elected
Torrez previously served on the committee and now returns by popular support. He said, “I’m incredibly happy to be back … I’m trying to give the voice for the athletes.” He added that diverse voices matter, because “what is my problem might not necessarily be the problem of someone in another continent.”
The new committee includes Buse Naz Çakıroğlu (Turkey), Caitlin Parker (Australia), Daniel Pitt (Wales), Yojerlin Cesar (France), Zareen Nikhat (India), and Torrez (USA). Two members of the committee will be nominated as Athlete Representatives to attend the Executive Board and Congress sessions.
As Athlete Representative, Torrez will help bridge the gap between boxers and leadership. His role is especially critical as World Boxing shapes new regulations and pushes to strengthen athlete rights and development.
Torrez is more than a committee member. He is also a decorated boxer. The American heavyweight is a 2020 Olympic silver medalist and maintains an undefeated professional record.
His involvement in governance suggests he aims to influence boxing beyond his performance in the ring.
With his re-election confirmed, Torrez’s voice is heard again among boxing’s decision makers. His presence may shift how athletes’ needs are prioritized within World Boxing’s evolving structure.
