An explosive upset shook the boxing world over the Memorial Day weekend when the highly anticipated Frank Sanchez vs Richard Torrez Jr. heavyweight title eliminator ended in a brutal, second-round knockout at the Pyramids in Giza, Egypt.
Sanchez vs Torrez Jr
The undefeated American prospect Richard Torrez Jr. was heavily favored by many analysts going into this bout.
However, the crowd was completely silenced by the experienced Cuban contender, Frank Sanchez, who delivered a perfectly timed counter-punching masterclass.
From the opening bell, aggressive pressure and fast hand speed were utilized by Torrez Jr. to dictate the pace. Solid combinations were landed by the Olympic silver medalist, but the storm was calmly weathered by “The Cuban Flash”.
The massive right uppercut unleashed by Sanchez caught Torrez Jr. squarely on the right jaw. The kid from Tulare was dropped instantly to the canvas. Adrenaline wasn’t enough for Torrez Jr. to get back up as the referee waved it off when he failed to regain his footing.
The entire landscape of the heavyweight division has been flipped on its side after this spectacular finish.
Not only was the IBF title eliminator secured by Frank Sanchez, but a direct line for a future world championship opportunity against unified king Oleksandr Usyk was also established.
A tough first loss for Torrez Jr. but nevertheless, a renewed perspective will surely be brought by the young prospect upon his return.
This is why I love the Heavyweights. Veteran poise overcoming youthful hype was on full display for fight fans watching all over the world.
In the post fight interview, Sanchez made a statement to the entire heavyweight division.
I kind of believe him.
