Colombian MMA fighter Sayury Cañón continues to make her mark in Mexico. Following her victory at MMA México vs. MFL, she is looking beyond the result, reflecting on a year of personal challenges, competitive growth, and a clear ambition: reaching the UFC.
Mexico has become an important part of Cañón’s journey over the past year. For the Colombian fighter, competing internationally represents more than an opportunity to showcase her skills. It is also a chance to carry her country’s name into the cage.
“Representing Colombia has always been a source of pride, but doing it in Mexico, after everything I have experienced and worked through this past year, makes it even more special,” Cañón told Fajador.
Her latest victory represents years of discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance. Despite facing difficult moments outside the cage, Cañón has continued to develop both physically and mentally.
A Victory Built on Mental Strength
During the fight, Cañón focused on maintaining her composure and adapting to her opponent’s approach. While she entered the cage with a strategy, certain situations required adjustments and quick decisions.
“Preparation gives you the tools, but experience and intelligence inside the cage tell you which one to use at each moment,” she explained.
For Cañón, mental strength has become just as important as technical preparation. She believes that discipline, resilience, and the ability to remain focused under pressure played a crucial role in her performance.
“I am a fighter who can be tired, afraid, or going through a difficult moment, but I never stop moving forward.”
Mexico and a New Chapter
Competing in the MMA México vs. MFL league versus league event carried additional significance. Beyond her individual performance, Cañón felt the responsibility of representing her team, organization, and country.
Her experience in Mexico has also contributed to her development as an athlete, allowing her to gain experience, overcome personal challenges, and approach competition with greater maturity.
“I don’t see this fight as just a sporting victory. For me, it also represents growth, maturity, and proving to myself that I can go through very difficult moments and still be the fighter I want to become.”
The UFC Dream
With another victory behind her, Cañón is determined to pursue opportunities that will bring her closer to the highest level of mixed martial arts.
She wants to face stronger opponents, compete on bigger stages, and make every fight a meaningful step forward.
However, her ambitions now come with a different perspective on the importance of physical and mental well-being.
“I have learned that being disciplined doesn’t mean pushing yourself until you break. It also means knowing when to recover, when to breathe, and when to prepare for the next chapter.”
Her ultimate goal remains unchanged.
“I want to make it to the UFC, and I will keep working to prove that I have the level to be there.”
For Sayury Cañón, her victory in Mexico is another chapter in a journey that continues to evolve. With Colombia behind her and her sights set on the UFC, she remains determined to turn years of preparation into opportunities on MMA’s biggest stages.
