Lucha Libre
September is always a huge month for pro wrestling in Mexico City, mostly because the cards are built around the Independence Day weekend. But if you had to pick just one live event this year, you’d have a seriously tough choice. Two major lucha libre promotions are running huge shows on the exact same weekend, forcing fans to pick a side.
CMLL Counterprograms AAA Triplemania
On one side, WWE-affiliated AAA has Triplemania 34 lined up for September 13. Right down the street, CMLL happens to be flying in talent from AEW, NJPW, and Stardom for their regular Sunday event. Maybe it’s just a scheduling coincidence. Realistically, though, it looks a lot like aggressive counterprogramming to fight for weekend ticket sales. Whatever the real story is behind the scenes, watching Mexico’s top two companies lock horns is fascinating.
The CMLL Arena Mexico Lineup
CMLL isn’t holding back at Arena Mexico. The card features Mistico teaming with “Speedball” Mike Bailey against Kevin Knight and Averno, plus Hechicero and Esfinge taking on Zack Sabre Jr. and Bad Dude Tito. If that wasn’t enough, we’re getting Titan and Soberano Jr. versus Bandido and Komander. The women’s side is equally stacked with a three-way tag match: AEW’s Megan Bayne and Lena Kross taking on Stardom’s Maika and Starlight Kid, alongside CMLL’s Persephone and Olympia. With a lineup this heavy, you have to wonder if any of these imports will stick around for the 93rd Anniversary show on September 18.
AAA’s Triplemania 34 Card
Over at Arena CDMX, AAA is firing back with Night 2 of Triplemania 34. Dominik Mysterio defends the Mega Championship against El Grande Americano, while Flammer puts the Reina de Reinas belt on the line against La Catalina. The Cruiserweight title match looks wild, with Rey Fenix defending against Mini Vikingo, Jack Cartwheel, and Nathan Frazer. Throw in a Mexican Street Fight between Psycho Clown and El Carnicero, and it’s easy to see why fans are completely torn. Either way, wrestling fans are winning big this September.
