Financial Struggles: The Fight for Support
Isidro Hernández Arroyo, the team’s MMA instructor, explained that the athletes are encountering significant financial barriers. Though they have submitted requests for funding to local governments in Cuautepec, Tulancingo, and Santiago Tulantepec, no assistance has been provided. Each athlete needs at least 13,000 pesos for travel, registration, accommodation, food, equipment, and uniforms. Unfortunately, most families cannot afford these expenses.
Community Effort to Raise Funds
Without governmental support, the athletes and their families have turned to grassroots fundraising. They have organized donation drives in local markets and Plaza del Vestido. Local businesses and individuals have also been approached for assistance. The team must raise 227,200 pesos to ensure that at least 19 athletes can attend and compete.
A Legacy of Success and Hope
Hernández Arroyo emphasized the team’s impressive track record, with three students winning national titles and one athlete securing a runner-up spot at the Pan American tournament last year. With their experience and proven success, the Tulancingo MMA team has a strong chance to compete at international tournaments.
The instructor is calling on private businesses to contribute and help send these talented athletes to the national competition, underscoring the vital role they play in nurturing local MMA talent.
