Who is Laura Burgos?
Born with a passion for martial arts, Burgos began her athletic journey in taekwondo before transitioning to muay thai. In 2012, she graduated with a degree in Information and Communication Sciences in Monterrey. Shortly after, friends introduced her to the world of muaythai — a move that would change her life forever.
Her dedication and discipline paid off when she became the first Mexican woman to win gold at the Muay thai World Championships in Patras, Greece, in 2024. She repeated the feat in Antalya 2025, becoming a back-to-back world champion.
The Road to Gold in Chengdu
Burgos entered the 2025 World Games as the favorite. She opened with a strong quarterfinal win over Belgium’s Axana Depyre (30-27). In the semifinals, she dominated Slovakia’s Monika Choclíková, also 30-27, securing her place in the final. Against Kierczynska, she fought with precision and heart, edging out the Polish contender to claim the gold.
A Winning Streak for Mexico
Burgos’ triumph adds to Mexico’s impressive medal haul at Chengdu 2025. Archer Andrea Becerra won gold in the women’s compound individual event and silver in the mixed team event with Sebastián García. With two golds and one silver so far, Mexico is aiming for one of its best performances in World Games history.
Laura Burgos’ legacy is now set in stone — a two-time world champion and World Games gold medalist, inspiring a new generation of fighters in Mexico.
