In an exciting journey for Mexican Combat sports, Melissa Alexandra “La Natural” Diaz is set to represent her country in the World MMA Championship. MMA World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, November 5-10 , 2024. The young Nuevo Laredo native has been training tirelessly in preparation for this prestigious event, which showcases the spirit and endurance of Hispanic athletes on the global stage.
From the moment she stepped into the MMA ring, Melissa has made an impact. “My dad and my coach gave me that nickname because when my brother had been training for two months, I tried a class and, after only a week, they put me in a fight and I won,”he recalls. His father recognized his natural talent and passion for the sport, which has only intensified over the years.
Since the beginning of September, Melissa has been immersed in an intense training regimen. She dedicates 6 to 7 hours a day to both physical and technical preparation under the guidance of her father and coach, Fernando Diaz. “I have a whole team supporting me, including my brother as official sparring partner, my dojo mates, my physical trainers, nutritionist José Ezra and my psychologists,” explains MelissaMelissa explains, highlighting the comprehensive support system that has driven her preparation.
His last training sessions took place at the M Elite Gym at the Dragon Club Fighters Academywhere he honed his skills and strengthened his mental toughness. “I feel more prepared than ever; my mind and body are in the right place. I’m now a more complete fighter, capable of handling any situation in the ring”, he says, reflecting on his decade-long journey in MMA since he began training at the age of 14 years old..
Melissa’s message to young athletes is one of perseverance:
“Don’t let anything stop you. We often face challenges that seem insurmountable, but test our resilience. Athletes see the laws of physics as suggestions; luck is for those who believe in accidents. Sweat is for those who know that victory is a choice.”
Her coach, Fernando Diaz, echoed her confidence in her preparation and noted that while she is physically exhausted from the rigorous training, her spirits remain high. “It’s an honor to compete among more than 60 countries fighting for gold; this is the biggest event in the world of amateur MMA”she says.
As they embark on their journey, Fernando and Melissa will travel first to Mexico City before catching a flight to Uzbekistan. “Arriving a few days early will help Melissa acclimate to the climate and time zone. It is a long trip, 25 to 28 hours with layovers,”she explains.
With three consecutive pre-championship wins, Melissa is ready to take on the best of the best. “We already have potential opponents from Angola and Kazakhstan. We’ll see how the draw goes on November 4 and adjust accordingly,”she adds.
