AAA Lucha Libre
When the WWE and AAA Lucha Libre deal first made headlines, wrestling fans immediately started to worry. People were scared the beloved Mexican promotion was going to lose the vibrant identity that makes it so special. But AAA CEO Dorian Roldán says those fears are misplaced. Speaking on the Bajo la Piel podcast, he explained that this buyout is actually a massive opportunity to put Mexican wrestling in front of a global audience.
A Vision for Global Wrestling Growth
Roldán pointed out that his uncle, Antonio Peña, started AAA with a very specific goal: sharing lucha libre with the world. The family tried international expansions before, teaming up with MGM and Robert Rodriguez. But Roldán feels WWE is the missing piece of the puzzle. With WWE’s top-tier production, marketing budget, and global reach, AAA finally has the backing to make Peña’s original dream a reality.
Decades of Secret WWE Discussions
This partnership didn’t just happen overnight. Roldán admitted that the two companies first tossed around the idea of a deal way back in 2010. They picked up the conversation again in 2017 following the death of his father, Joaquín Roldán. At the time, AAA just wasn’t structured for a takeover by a massive American corporation. That realization pushed Dorian to overhaul the company behind the scenes, turning it into a professional powerhouse ready for exactly this kind of move.
Protecting the True Mexican Spirit
It’s easy to see why fans think AAA might get watered down into a standard Americanized brand. Roldán was quick to shut that down. He made it clear that preserving the true soul of lucha libre is a top priority for both sides. WWE knows exactly what they bought, and they want to keep the cultural identity fully intact. The exposure is already paying off, landing AAA a weekly spot on FOX in Latin America and streaming internationally on YouTube. Roldán even hinted that WWE’s push into Mexico won’t stop here, mentioning rival promotion CMLL as another likely target. For now, the future of authentic lucha libre is completely safe.
