Ronaldo “Lazy Boy” Rodríguez
Local fighters in Reynosa just got a massive upgrade to their training routine. Recently, UFC standout Ronaldo “Lazy Boy” Rodríguez hosted an action-packed Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) seminar in the city. Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz backed the special event to promote local sports and help regional athletes sharpen their competitive skills.
Elite UFC Training Hits the Local Mats
The Municipal Sports Institute opened the doors of the High-Performance Center at the Polideportivo for this high-energy clinic. Representing Mayor Peña Ortiz, Sports Institute Director Saúl Soto Castro attended the seminar to welcome the participants. Because of this city-backed initiative, rising talents learned striking and grappling techniques directly from an elite fighter. The Reynosa government continues to create valuable spaces where local athletes can grow, train, and connect with world-class sports figures.
From Selling Freezies to the UFC Octagon
For the athletes in attendance, learning from Luis Ronaldo Rodríguez was about much more than punches and kicks. Born on May 7, 1999, in Jiquipilas, Chiapas, the UFC Flyweight and Bantamweight contender knows all about overcoming tough odds. As a child, his family moved to Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, a city heavily impacted by organized crime. Fortunately, Rodríguez discovered karate early on. In fact, he credits martial arts with keeping him off the streets when many of his acquaintances fell into crime.
A Blueprint for Grit and Determination
Before reaching the bright lights of the UFC, Rodríguez hustled hard to survive. Specifically, he worked in construction and sold freeze pops on the side just to make ends meet. Eventually, he saved enough money from both jobs to move to Mexico City and launch his professional MMA career. By bringing fighters with this level of grit to the Polideportivo, Reynosa gives its youth both technical training and real-life inspiration. Now, the city’s next generation of martial artists knows that hard work and discipline can take them anywhere.
