Sports for Peace: Michoacán’s Historic Weekend
The “Plan Michoacán for Peace and Justice” reached a truly historic milestone this past weekend. Through the transformative power of sports, the state consolidated a massive day of unity and healthy competition. Specifically, the state selections for taekwondo, athletics, and chess took center stage. These disciplines now serve as vital pillars for training local youth ahead of the CONADE 2026 National Olympiad.
Considered Mexico’s maximum multi-sport event, the qualifiers mobilized nearly 900 determined athletes. These young competitors from diverse regions are currently seeking their ticket to the upcoming regional stage in Jalisco.
Taekwondo Sees Unprecedented Turnout
Taekwondo positioned itself as the most popular discipline of the event. In fact, it registered a historic figure for the entity with 470 registered athletes. Consequently, the competition was fierce and divided into two specific groups.
The event featured 407 combatants fighting across distinct weight categories. Moreover, 63 specialists in forms (poomsae) demonstrated the state’s significant technical growth.
Excellence on the Track and Board
The “Ernesto Canto” track in Morelia became a scene of dreams for 314 registered runners. From fast sprinters to durable distance runners, local talent aims to leave a mark on the stopwatch. They represent Michoacán with pride.
Conversely, the “science of sport” did not lag behind. The chess championship gathered over 100 competitors distributed in six categories. Marked by strategy and concentration, the games followed a rhythm of 60 minutes with 30-second increments, elevating the intellectual demand.
Strengthening the Social Fabric
The broad reach of this selection process highlights the Plan’s success. It convened youth from nearly 30 municipalities, including Pátzcuaro, Uruapan, and the Purépecha Plateau community of Cherán. Even border zones like Huetamo participated.
With these actions, Michoacán seeks more than just success on the CONADE 2026 medal table. Above all, they aim to offer alternatives for well-being and to rebuild the social fabric through the pursuit of sporting excellence.
